This is in response to the songfic challenge. This isn't exactly what was asked for. I modified Ty Herndon song Hat Full Of Rain to fit the times and the make it read more like a letter.

Kid Curry sat down under the tree and pulled his knees up to make a desk to balance the notebook He stared at the blank page like the words would write themselves if he thought about them hard enough. After a few minutes, he sighed and picked up the pen. He wasn't very good with words, that was Heyes' department. But Heyes wasn't there and Kid really needed to do this. With another sigh, Kid started to write.
I've been ridin' for through the storm
Feelin' weary and worn
Outside the shelter of your arms
It's been forty days and nights
Since we said our last goodbye
And there ain't a single rainbow in sight
The sky keeps on cryin'
I keep callin' your name
Can't find the will to keep on tryin'
Got a heart full of sorrow
and a hat full of rain
I'm soaked clear to the skin
There's a chill settin' in
And this ol' horse's shakin'
like a willow in the wind
I've been up and down this coast
Runnin' from loves ghost
It's the good memories
that hurt the most
Got to find the will to keep on tryin'
I got a heart full of sorrow and a hat full of rain
Kid reread what he'd written. When he was satisfied with what he'd wrote, he tore the page out of the book and placed the folded letter in the bottom of his saddle bag. That was one letter nobody was going to read.
